This past Sunday evening during the NBC broadcast of football, commentator Bob Costas used the occasion of the tragic death of Chiefs’ player Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend as an opportunity to speak out in favor of gun control in the U.S.

And while we can all have differing opinions on the topic – as well as the wisdom of Costas to use this particular forum for his thoughts – the cold hard fact is that there are already a great many weapons in the country.

According to a recent story published by CNN, nearly one-third of U.S. households own a firearm, according to a 2011 study produced by The University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center.

One study released in 2007 estimated that as many as 270,000,000 guns are owned by civilians. At the time, that would mean one weapon for 9 out of every 10 people. And no matter how you stack or sort the statistics, there’s a great many weapons in private hands.

ArmorCore announced today that they will be a supplier of anti-ballistic panels that will be utilized to secure electric substations from potential terroristic attacks.

So with respect to Mr. Costas, perhaps instead of being concerned about restricting new gun ownership, we can all give a little thought to how our employees and families can be protected from the weapons that are already out there.
